proudly presented the 2003

Grady McWhiney Award of Merit

on Wednesday, September 10, 2003

to

Donald S. Frazier, Ph.D.

Dr. Donald S. Frazier

Congratulations to Dr. Don Frazier, Professor of History at McMurry University, for his many contributions to Civil War History. Dr. Frazier is a leading Civil War historian, specializing in Texas and the Trans-Mississippi West. Among his works is the highly acclaimed Blood and Treasure: Confederate Empire in the Southwest. Dr. Frazier is an appropriate winner on several levels, not solely for his scholarship. He was also a doctoral student of Dr. Grady McWhiney. When Dr. McWhiney and his former students and a host of other noted Civil War historians established the Grady McWhiney Research Foundation, dedicated to the study of the Middle Period of U.S. history, with a special emphasis on Civil War, Southern, and military history, it was sited at McMurry University in Abilene and named Dr. Frazier as its executive director. Under his vigorous leadership the foundation has steadily grown and expanded, becoming one of the outstanding organizations of its kind in the country.

The Award, named in honor of Dr. Grady McWhiney, is presented annually to an individual or organization that has contributed significantly to the scholarship or preservation of Civil War history.
